Dead poets society reflection

In the movie Dead Poets Society we see a lot of struggles by the students on their own internal and external journeys. The movie portrays how some students had it and how the English teacher Mr. Keating tried to liberate them. To let them choose their own paths in life and to stand up for themselves. Along the movie he helped his class but mostly two of them, Todd and Neil. Todd was a shy student were he didn’t speak or said what was on his mind. He thought that his saying wasn’t valuable or that worth something. At one point in the movie Mr. Keating help him realize that he had it in him the whole time by doing an exercise which push Todd to improvise a poem in front of the class. At first Todd was terrified at doing such exercise but then everything got its flow and he beat his fear. Now there was another student Neil which he had it though. With Mr. Keating`s class he realize what he wanted to do in his life. Neil realize that he wanted to be an actor. His internal journey was on wanting to become an actor and he even got on auditions for a play and got the leader role on it. He had a problem and it was that his dad didn’t want him to be an actor but a doctor. That`s where the external journey comes in on his dad wanting something else in Neil`s life and not wanting to understand Neil`s passion or thoughts. With that struggle that Neil had he didn’t hesitated and committed suicide. In my opinion it was something a little too tragic of an action to do but there had been cases of desperation that end up just like that. It could have ended like Neil running away or even trying to make Mr. Perry understand better his son`s feelings.

  1. Yes, it is true. Had tragic moments, but the teaching of the film is very nice. To me, I really liked the story. I wish that more professors like Mr. Keating could teach.

  2. I liked the part where Keating challenged Todd into improvising the poem. He'd noticed Todd had been having problems expressing himself in class, and he offered his help and pushed him to let out his voice.

  3. Nice summary about the movie, I'm in complete according with Debora, becuase I also like the movie. It's very sad that, nowadays, we have parents who wants to draw a path for their children, but they can't draw their own paths, just like the father at the movie. Is by parents like him, that we have some children taking off their lives, just by their interests on their lives.

  4. I too felt like Neil's suicide was totally unexpected because I understood that he was suffering, but not to that extent. With the recent death of Robin Williams I am starting to get a better understanding of depression and it's underlying consequences that are not visible to the naked eye.
